How to Solve the Problem of Frequently Punctured Tires on an Electric Wheelchair?
How much do tubeless tires for Meyra Optimus 2 cost?
Tired of constantly punctured tires on my Meyra Optimus 2, I decided to look for a solution that would permanently eliminate this problem. I contacted Meyra's service to inquire about the cost of a set of solid, tubeless tires. I learned that it is not possible to buy just the tires; one must purchase the entire wheels, and the cost is over 3,000 PLN (autumn 2023). This high price, along with having new tires that I had recently purchased, forced me to look for other solutions.
How to Install Puncture-Proof Tires on an Electric Wheelchair for the Lowest Cost?
On the internet, I found a company that fills tires with a pneumatic elastomer (polyurethane foam), and their cost would be around 1,800 PLN. However, after searching further, I found a service provider where the price depends on the amount of elastomer used. At 23 PLN per liter, I calculated that filling all the tires should not cost me more than 1,000 PLN, including VAT. An additional advantage was that the company sends a courier to pick up the tires.
Before filling the tires, the contractor contacted me. He suggested filling the tires to 10% less than the recommended pressure stated on the tire to make them less hard and improve driving conditions. I agreed, and after a week, I received the tires filled with elastomer.
Is it Worth Installing Solid Tires on an Electric Wheelchair?
My initial impressions of riding on solid wheels were rather negative. The polyurethane foam-filled, hard tires worsen ride comfort, but with every kilometer traveled, it bothered me less and less. I am now very pleased that I opted for solid wheels because I am confident that I will never have a flat tire again.
If you often find yourself puncturing tires on your electric wheelchair, it's worth considering filling the wheels with a substance that, while it may decrease ride comfort, guarantees a stress-free return home.
