Kołobrzeg – tourist attractions accessible for wheelchair users

Kołobrzeg lighthouse

For years, Kołobrzeg has been considered one of the most disability-friendly seaside cities on the Baltic coast. Thanks to its developing infrastructure, accessible beaches, and wide promenades, people using wheelchairs can comfortably explore, relax, and enjoy tourist attractions here. In recent years, the city has consistently invested in solutions improving accessibility, such as lowered curbs, ramps, elevators, accessible public toilets, and adapted facilities in tourist sites. As a result, Kołobrzeg is becoming a place where barrier-free tourism is not just a slogan but a real possibility.

Beaches in Kołobrzeg for wheelchair users

Kołobrzeg's beaches are among the best adapted on the Baltic coast in terms of accessibility. During the summer season, special access points and ramps are prepared to allow closer entry to the sand zone, as well as changing cabins adapted for people with disabilities. Lifeguards are present on site and can provide assistance when needed, increasing comfort and safety. If you use a wheelchair, you can reach areas close to the sea at five locations:

  • Western Beach at the "TRM bathing area", beach entrance at Arciszewskiego Street (No. 23).
Access with a platform (lift) for people with disabilities.
  • Central Beach at the "Bałtyk" bathing area (entrance No. 19) and "Słoneczko" (entrance No. 14).
The beaches feature accessibility facilities in the form of laid-out platforms made of recycled rubber (relumat).
  • "Kamienny Szaniec" bathing area, beach entrance No. 9.
The area is covered with a relumat platform to facilitate access to the beach. An adapted changing cabin and benches are also available.
  • "Marina Hotel" bathing area, beach entrance No. 6.
A ramp with a handrail allows wheelchair users to overcome elevation differences. A relumat platform approx. 30 m long, benches, and an accessible changing cabin are available. There is also an accessible toilet near the pedestrian and cycling path.

A particularly unique attraction is the amphibious beach wheelchair, a special device that allows wheelchair users to enter the water. This service is available during the summer season and provides a rare opportunity in Poland to fully experience swimming in the sea. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to try it, but to use the amphibious wheelchair, you should contact the lifeguards on duty at the watchtower located at Kamienny Szaniec (entrance No. 9) or call in advance at +48 532 727 902.

The promenade in Kołobrzeg

The seaside promenade in Kołobrzeg is one of the most frequently visited places in the city. Its surface is even and paved, making it easy to navigate with a wheelchair.
The promenade starts at the Kołobrzeg lighthouse and is divided into two sections. The first covers the Jan Szymański Boulevard and is approximately 500 meters long. The second runs along Rodziewiczówny, Sikorskiego, and Sułkowskiego streets, is about 3.5 km long, and ends near the Arka hotel.
Along the promenade and in its surroundings, there are many attractions mostly accessible to people with disabilities, such as the Stefan Żeromski Seaside Park, the Kołobrzeg amphitheater, and monuments including the Monument of the Wedding of Poland to the Sea, Commander Stanisław Mieszkowski Monument, Little Fisherman Monument, and the Nurse Monument. There are also many wheelchair-accessible restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish or aromatic coffee while admiring the sea view accompanied by the sound of waves.

The pier in Kołobrzeg

Entrance to the pier in Kołobrzeg

Getting to the pier in Kołobrzeg is easy, and moving around it should not cause major difficulties. However, wheelchair users with active wheelchairs should be careful, as the wheels may get stuck in the gaps between the wooden planks covering this attraction.
The pier in Kołobrzeg is the longest reinforced-concrete structure of its kind in Poland. It is 220 meters long, 9 meters wide, and the walking deck is about 4.5 meters above sea level.
In the tourist season, entry to the pier is paid, but from 2026 onward, people with a severe disability certificate and their caregivers will have free admission. A free ticket can be collected at the ticket office.

Kołobrzeg lighthouse and surroundings

The Kołobrzeg lighthouse is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and often a must-see attraction. Unfortunately, the tower itself is not accessible for wheelchair users due to stairs leading to the top. However, the surrounding area is well adapted and allows easy movement. From the waterfront level, visitors can enjoy views of the harbor and take photos capturing the seaside atmosphere. Nearby, there are many service and food outlets, most of which are accessible for people with disabilities.
Near the lighthouse, there is the mouth of the Parsęta River and the Kołobrzeg seaport. Along the harbor entrance canal, there are long breakwaters that are easily accessible for wheelchair users. The view from the end of the breakwater is as impressive as from the pier.

Port and boat cruises – attractions accessible for everyone

The Kołobrzeg port offers various tourist cruises on the Baltic Sea, which are one of the city's most interesting attractions. Some passenger vessels have themed styling, such as pirate-era ships, and are adapted for wheelchair users, although in many cases boarding requires assistance from the crew. Cruises include both short sightseeing trips and longer tours, during which you can admire the coastline and Kołobrzeg's panorama from the sea.

Wheelchair accessory rental in Kołobrzeg

Kołobrzeg offers a wheelchair attachment rental service that enables active sightseeing for people with various types of disabilities. Available equipment includes hybrid-powered attachments for paraplegic and tetraplegic users, as well as electric-powered wheelchair attachments. The rental point is located at the Sebastian Karpiniuk Stadium on Śliwińskiego Street 10 in Kołobrzeg, phone +48 517 646 162.
The service is free of charge, which further increases its accessibility.

The accommodation base in Kołobrzeg is constantly developing, and more and more hotels offer rooms adapted for wheelchair users. Such facilities provide step-free entrances, wide doors, elevators, and bathrooms designed for people with disabilities. In many cases, wellness and spa areas are also accessible, making a seaside stay comfortable and independent.
From my experience, I can recommend the Milenium hotel, where I had the opportunity to stay for several days. The hotel is fully adapted for wheelchair users. Its downside, however, is the distance from the sea (about 2 km).

Transport and getting around Kołobrzeg

Getting around Kołobrzeg is relatively easy thanks to a well-developed public transport system and road infrastructure. Many buses are low-floor and adapted for people with disabilities, and most of the city has modern sidewalks with lowered curbs.

Summary – Kołobrzeg without barriers is a real option

Kołobrzeg is one of the Polish seaside cities that is practically developing accessible tourism for people with disabilities. Although not all attractions are fully adapted yet, beach infrastructure, the promenade, cruises, equipment rental services, and an improving hotel offer make it possible to enjoy a comfortable stay on the Baltic Sea for wheelchair users. The city is consistently moving toward full accessibility, making it one of the more disability-friendly resorts in Poland and worth visiting for both short and longer stays.
