Wieliczka Salt Mine

Entrance to the building of the Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of those places that captivates visitors regardless of age, season, or travel experience. Located just a few kilometers from Kraków, it has attracted tourists for centuries with its history, extraordinary underground chambers, and intricately carved salt sculptures. It is not only a monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, but also a living testament to the work of many generations of miners who shaped this unique place over the centuries.

Wieliczka Salt Mine – tickets and opening hours

When visiting Kraków, it would be a real shame not to see such a major tourist attraction as the Wieliczka Salt Mine—especially since it offers a special route for people with disabilities who use wheelchairs.
Using the website, I reserved tickets for our group two months in advance, as during the tourist season the number of visitors willing to take the tour may exceed the available places. The mine's official website also always provides up-to-date opening hours.
After paying for and collecting the tickets at the mine's ticket office, we stood at the designated meeting point and waited for the guide.

Wieliczka Salt Mine – people with disabilities

Inaccessible entrance to a chamber on the route for people with disabilities

The entrance to the Wieliczka Salt Mine building was via a not very comfortable ramp, and the lift itself turned out to be very narrow, which had been announced in advance. When reserving the tickets, I received clear information that the wheelchair could not be wider than 59 cm. Fortunately, I measured it at home and removed the push rims, because with them my wheelchair was over 63 cm wide and I would have had no chance of fitting into the lift, which is an original mining hoist.

The descent in the lift shaft to a depth of nearly 100 meters was very quick, and we began the tour, moving along paths with wheelchair-friendly surfaces. At the beginning there was a chamber accessible only by several steps, but the subsequent attractions were fully adapted for people with disabilities. The first large chamber entirely carved out of salt was the Drozdowice Chamber, dedicated to the mine's carpenters. In its central part stand two beautifully carved salt figures depicting this demanding and responsible craft. We then saw an underground lake with a salinity significantly higher than that of the Dead Sea.

St. Kinga's Chapel in the Wieliczka Salt Mine

St. Kinga's Chapel

The greatest attraction of the Wieliczka Salt Mine is St. Kinga's Chapel, where all elements are made of salt and where Holy Masses are held. This enormous chamber features beautifully depicted biblical scenes along the sides, an altar in the center, and chandeliers hanging above it, made from thousands of pieces of salt. At the entrance there is also a finely carved salt statue of Pope John Paul II.
The next stage was the Stanisław Staszic Chamber, which we reached by a modern lift. The descent itself was quite an attraction, as suddenly a vast open space appeared beneath our feet. This part of the tour is available exclusively on the route for people with disabilities. Afterwards, we passed through a restaurant where visitors can have a meal and reached a huge concert hall that can also be rented, for example, as a wedding venue.
The entire visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine lasted about two hours, and we returned to the surface the same way—by the mining lift.

Wieliczka Salt Mine – review

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a truly exceptional place, not only in historical and tourist terms, but also in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities. The specially prepared route, adapted infrastructure, and professional staff make the visit comfortable and full of unforgettable experiences. It is an attraction that should definitely be included when planning a trip around Lesser Poland—regardless of whether one is fully able-bodied or uses a wheelchair.
Visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine is an unforgettable experience, and St. Kinga's Chapel is the real "cherry on top" that everyone will remember for many years.
